Maybe I'll give it a view. Earlier criticisms about its political message had me sour on it.

Those are there (kind of). You have two fictional countries that could be mapped onto the Israel/Palestine and Russia/Ukraine conflicts. With Superman being an immigrant (as a literal alien), there are some parallels to current conversations about how to treat and respond to immigrants living in our midst and how much rights non-citizens should have. But those are not the main thrust of the movie. Again, it is much more about hope vs. cynicism.

It is, at its core, a comic book movie in every sense. That may not work for some people who want something more serious or more grounded. This is not Dark Knight, but it is a fun movie that has something to say about goodness, kindness, and hope.
