The Door Jam is a place to squeeze in articles about C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien, their work, adaptations of their fantasy worlds, news from other franchises, and interesting articles. Unless otherwise stated, I’m not endorsing (or criticizing) any of these but merely sharing them with you.
After weeks of casting rumors, this week’s top story looks at someone working behind the camera on Narnia.
Cinematographer Seamus McGarvey will be the director of photography for Narnia, according to Production Weekly. McGarvey is an Academy Award nominee for his work on Atonement (2007) and Anna Karenina (2012).
He also has experience shooting major blockbusters like The Avengers (2012) and Godzilla (2014). McGarvey was also tapped as cinematographer for Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) but had to step away after catching COVID. Interestingly enough considering the director of Narnia, he also shot a 2018 movie called Greta.
Perhaps McGarvey can draw on images and scenery familiar to Lewis as he was also born in Northern Ireland and attended school in England.
According to Narnia Web, McGarvey said it’s a misconception to think cinematography is mainly about “photography and innovative shots and beautiful lighting.” In reality, “what really defines a great cinematographer is one who loves story.” If that’s how he views the job, I can see why Greta Gerwig would believe he could visualize Lewis’ story.
